Breast Enlargement (Augmentation Mammaplasty)

Breast Augmentation is typically performed to enlarge small or underdeveloped breasts, or to restore the natural breast volume that may have decreased as a result of pregnancy, weight loss or aging. Others desire improved breast balance when one breast is smaller than the other. A woman must have completed breast development and have the emotional maturity to decide if breast augmentation is right for her. A realistic expectation is also a critical factor to ultimate satisfaction with the procedure. The initial consultation provides the opportunity to ask questions specific to your needs and gain a thorough understanding of the technique. Incisions are commonly placed under the breast just above the crease, around the areola, or in the armpit. Dr. Parva will assist each patient in choosing the best approach for them, although he specializes in placement of the breast implant through the armpit to avoid any scars on the breast. Generally, recovery time is less than a week and many women who work outside the home will return to work within several days.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Many women experience considerable stretching of skin and loss of breast volume after pregnancy and nursing, or as a result of weight loss and aging. A breast lift is required to tighten the skin and elevate the nipple. Breast implants are often placed at the time of a breast lift to reestablish, or enhance, the breast volume. Results may last longer when implants are inserted in conjunction with a breast lift. Various techniques are used and are individualized to each patient, based on their anatomy and desired results. Recovery is generally 1 to 2 weeks.

Breast Reduction

The excessive weight of very large and pendulous breasts can cause a variety of medical problems and interfere with normal function and physical activity. Women often experience back and neck pain, shoulder grooving from bra straps and skin irritation under the breast. Breast reduction may alleviate many of the physical problems while also improving the shape of the breasts and nipple area. Overall appearance is also improved by making the breasts more proportionate to the rest of the body. At surgery, excess skin and tissue are removed while repositioning the nipple. This may be performed as an outpatient or, more often with an overnight stay at the hospital. Various techniques exist and every effort is made to minimize the scar, but the scars are typically visible around the nipple region and over the lower pole of the breast and underlying breast crease. A supportive bra is worn for several weeks after surgery and strenuous activity avoided for a similar time period.

Breast Asymmetry Correction

Most women have some degree of breast asymmetry, although generally mild. However, others may have significant imbalance in the size and shape of the breasts. This may occur as a result of aging, pregnancy and nursing or weight changes. Still more significant asymmetries may be manifestations of underlying congenital anomalies. Depending on the degree and cause of the asymmetry, treatment may involve implants alone or the use of muscle and tissues flaps.

Abnormal Breast Development

Breast deformities may become evident as a teenager develops into young adulthood. Lack of symmetry and abnormal shape and size of the breast can have a significant psychological impact on a young woman and how she relates to her peers. Yet, appropriate evaluation and thoughtful planning and treatment can relieve these anxieties and give a more normal breast appearance. Depending on the degree and cause of the asymmetry, treatment may involve implants alone or the use of muscle and tissues flaps.

Gynecomastia (Enlargement of the Male Breast)

Enlargement of the male breast may be seen in teenage boys and older men. Many teenagers will have some degree of breast enlargement but more than 90% of these young men will experience resolution of this condition within one to two years. Therefore, an initial period of observation is justified prior to considering surgical intervention. In adult men, up to 40% may be affected by some degree of breast enlargement.

A complete history and physical examination is important since various diseases (i.e. liver and lung disease, testicular cancer, adrenal and pituitary tumors) and drugs (i.e. marijuana, heroin) or medications (i.e. anabolic agents, antipsychotic drugs, etc.) may contribute to the development of enlarged breasts in men. The possibility of breast cancer is also an important consideration in the adult male.

The surgical procedure is individualized to the patient depending on their body type and degree of breast enlargement. Dr. Parva uses ultrasound-assisted liposuction in treating the majority of his patients. This state-of-the-art technology removes the majority of excess breast tissue through one or two small half-inch incisions. In some individuals, another small incision at the margin of the nipple is used to surgically remove thick fibrous tissue directly under the nipple.
